SLOVAK Foreign Affairs Minister Eduard Kukan made a request for EU aid to help pay for the after-effects of the catastrophic winds of November 22.
Financial aid should come from the European Solidarity Fund, especially established for this purpose. Initial reactions from the Dutch EU presidency were positive, according to Kukan.
"It's up to us now to present the accounting of the damages," Kukan told the TASR news wire, adding that the amount of financial help depends on the size of the loss.
Any country wanting disaster aid must apply within ten weeks of the catastrophe occurring. However, Kukan expects Slovakia to apply much sooner.
Slovak Agriculture Minister Zsolt Simon made a similar request to the EU at a ministerial session in Brussels on Monday.
