EDUARD Kukan, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union candidate for president, denied that he had worked with the secret service (ŠtB) during communism.
The Slovak daily SME wrote on March 18 that it had received an anonymous letter that stated that Kukan had worked for the ŠtB and that his cooperation had begun “when he studied at the Moscow institute for international relations MGIMO.”
Kukan studied at MGIMO between 1958 and 1964. He said in 1968 that he had been approached by the ŠtB but refused cooperation.
According to Kukan, the allegations were a political ploy as part of the presidential race.
