Kukan's candidacy received coolly

Prime minister Mikuláš Dzurinda's support of foreign minister Eduard Kukan for the presidency in scheduled 2004 elections drew criticism from his ruling coalition partners, who prefer a candidate who was not a member of the former communist regime.

Kukan was a member of the Communist Party during his service abroad at Czechoslovak diplomatic missions in Africa in the 1970s.
