Salary differences between men and women prevail in Slovakia according to a recent report on gender equality prepared by the Labour Ministry, with the gender salary gap reaching up to 20 percent, the TASR newswire reported.
“A positive factor is that this difference has gone down by around 20 percent over the last five years,” states the report, as quoted by TASR, adding that despite women’s high educational level that is better than for men, women still lag behind in salaries. The report stated that the main reason is that women’s education in “typically female sectors” is less valued.
“Stereotypical views and prejudice about work suitable for women are also reflected in the choice of education,” the report states, adding that this has a negative impact on salary levels.
“Women are confronted with vertical and horizontal segregation in the labour market,” states the ministry report, as quoted by TASR, adding that women make up 80 percent of employees in some sectors such as education, health care and social services.
“In the private sector, which is characterised by higher incomes, women represent 42 percent [of the workforce],” the report stated.
