Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák met with the executive director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Deputy Secretary General Thoraya Ahmed Obaid in Bratislava on March 18 to discuss deepening cooperation between Slovakia and UNFPA, a Foreign Ministry spokesman told the TASR newswire.
The main topic of their meeting was possible establishment of an UNFPA Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Bratislava this year.
Obaid is, as well, currently taking part in the regional planning meeting of UNFPA, which is one of the main development funds of the UN system aimed at providing assistance mostly to developing countries. The fund started in 1969 and its program focuses on three priority areas: population and development, reproductive health, and gender equality and related rights.
The establishment of the UNFPA Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Bratislava was approved by the Slovak government on January 14, 2009. TASR
