Bilateral relations plus international questions including the Western Balkans and the EU’s Eastern Partnership were among the issues discussed by Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák and his US counterpart, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, at a meeting on Wednesday, July 25, the TASR newswire reported.
During the meeting Lajčák praised Clinton’s actions as the USA’s chief diplomat, and her contribution to solving serious international problems.
He added that the foreign policy of Slovakia is based on two principles – its EU and NATO memberships – and that this will not change.
“This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Prague NATO Summit where Slovakia was invited to join the alliance,” Lajčák said, as quoted by TASR. “We appreciate the key role the US played in that process and I am glad that we have not betrayed your trust and returned you this strategic investment in [the form of] being a reliable partner today.”
Lajčák and Clinton agreed that one of the positive aspects of Slovakia’s performance in the international structure is its presence in Afghanistan within the ISAF mission. Clinton praised Slovakia’s help and highlighted its role in discussions over the Western Balkans and the EU’s Eastern Partnership, as well as in the process of democratisation in Tunisia, TASR wrote.
