The Slovak Parliament approved a governing coalition amendment to the State Language Act on Thursday, December 9. The revision tones down the law currently in effect, which was made more stringent by the previous government of Robert Fico, the TASR newswire wrote.
The new amendment, submitted by the Culture Ministry, reduces the number of situations in which sanctions can be applied. As of January 2011, fines - the most criticised part of the law – can only be imposed in cases where information concerning the lives, health, security or property of Slovak citizens, or information published by public administration authorities, is not presented in Slovak.
