Since October, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Office (UPSVR) in Zvolen has been notified of a total of 1,250 planned layoffs in the region's districts of Zvolen, Detva and Krupina, the TASR newswire was told on Thursday, March 26.
In autumn 2008 when the effects of the economic crisis began to affect the region it was expected that only a total of 176 people would lose their jobs, TASR wrote.
“The number of people that three companies intend to dismiss has been going up every month,” said Milan Bela from the office. PPS Group Detva, WAY Industry Krupina and VZOR Zvolen employed a total of 2,400 people at the beginning of last October but now they are operating with only half that number.
Engineering company PPS Group has announced that it is laying off 600 staff, 430 of which are already registered with a local job centre. WAY Industry Krupina, also an engineering company, has notified the local labour office that it is making 400 people redundant. Textile company VZOR has announced that it will lay off 250 of its employees.
According to Bela, the office is able to offer only 100 job vacancies, mainly in the areas of services and office work. The unemployment rate in the districts of Zvolen, Detva and Krupina stood at 8.6 percent in late August 2008, but has reached 10.9 percent at the end of February. TASR
