THE LAST man to set foot on the moon, Eugen Andrew Cernan, was awarded an honorary doctorate at the Slovak University of Technology (STU) in Bratislava on September 27.
An American of Slovak extraction, Cernan received the same award in 1978 from Comenius University, the oldest university in Slovakia, news wire TASR wrote.
The presentation ceremony was attended by around three hundred representatives from universities across Slovakia.
Cernan said in his address: "When I was a small boy I dreamt that I would fly one day. My dream today is to be an inspiration for my grandchildren as my grandparents were for me."
Born on March 14, 1934, in Chicago Illinois, Cernan was commander of Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon.
