President Ivan Gašparovič has signed into law two amendments scrapping MPs’ immunity from criminal prosecution. The change, passed by parliament at the end of July, will come into effect on September 1, the TASR newswire wrote.
Deputies will lose their protection from prosecution if they commit a crime, but will retain immunity for statements and votes in parliament, according to the new rules. However, parliament will still have to decide whether it will allow police to commence an investigation against a politician, TASR wrote.
A total of 144 MPs voted in favour of amending the constitution, while 145 backed respective changes to the Penal Code to abolish immunity.
