Dear Editor,
A big thank you must be given to Daniel J. Stoll and his wife Renata Stoll for their excellent two-part interview with ex-Prime Minister Vladimír Mečiar. The questions were probing and gave an adequate insight into the position the HZDS wishes to move in.
The Tom Nicholson interview with [Citibank Director] David Francis was also highly informative. Was it by coincidence that these two interviews happened to appear in the same issue of your newspaper?
Mečiar admits that he made mistakes during his time in power, something that David Francis agrees with. But if the information in both interviews happens to be true, then Meciar's mistakes, according to Francis, were not huge ones.
Interestingly enough, it has taken this government about a year to fix the macro-economic problems of Slovakia, a relatively short time in economic terms. So are we to draw from this that the economic problems inherited from Mečiar were not as serious as previously thought?
Put together, these interviews seem to show clearly that everything that went wrong with Slovakia wasn't Mr. Mečiar's fault, and so says Mr Francis.
Bryan Rylands,
Košice
