Letter to the Editor: Newspaper press is really free

Font size: A - | A +

Dear Sir,

Jay Zedník has evidently read very few Slovak newspapers when he can imply that the bulk of this country's press is unbalanced and blindly pro-government (letters vol. 3, no. 16). Though some papers do certainly fit this description (Slovenská Republika, for instance), dailies like Pravda and práca give good, unbiased reporting while Sme is boldly anti-government and a beacon of light for those who fear censorship of the press here.

The sad thing is that although papers like these struggle hard to show this government in its true light, there are still a mass of people out there who retain faith in the ruling coalition and its leader.

Yours, Johnathan Cresty

P.S. What's wrong with Humenné? A "grim city" - you make it sound like Gotham. An industrial town which has kept afloat while retaining some of its pre-1989 character. Broad, spacious Soviet style avenues; friendly people; gracious shop -assistants, a few shop signs in Cyrillic. I loved it!
