Daniel Markus, an Australian ex-pat who has been teaching English at Bratislava's Gymnázium Matky Alexie for seven years, gave his English students (16 to 17 years old) an assignment in November: write a Letter to the Editor based on something they read in Vol. 5 No. 38 of The Slovak Spectator. Here is some of what they wrote:

Dear Editor,

In your reviews of Old Town cafés, I found Roland Café on the Main Square mentioned. You wrote that it was the most charming and traditional Bratislava café.

I really cannot understand why you are writing about cafés like this one. In my opinion, a normal person or a tourist could find better cafés in the Old Town. Who would pay about 100 crowns for breakfast, especially one you can only eat after 8:30 a.m.?

I demand only one thing: that you write about cafés or anything that is really charming in our city where tourists can feel natural and get to know our traditions.
