Letter to the Editor: Striking a sensitive note

Font size: A - | A +

Dear Editor,

Mr. Kubove, I do believe that Mr. Guerrier's letter has struck a sensitive nerve - perhaps because there is too much truth in it for your taste. While Americans do not greet visitors from other countries with fluent conversation in their native tongues, they don't scream at them either. I don't believe this is an issue of 'Slovak local custom' because I found Slovaks to be well mannered; it just seems that politeness does not extend to dealing with tourists.

Having lived in Slovakia for two years, I agree completely with Mr. Guerrier and find his suggestions to ease the barriers to communication excellent. Suggesting proper signposting and civility from those in positions requiring contact with foreigners is not a 'political scandal' - it's just good manners.
