Daniel Markus, an Australian ex-pat who has been teaching English at Bratislava's Gymnázium Matky Alexie for seven years, gave his English students (16 to 17 years old) an assignment in November: write a Letter to the Editor based on something they read in Vol. 5 No. 38 of The Slovak Spectator. Here is some of what they wrote:
Dear Editor,
I read your article called '[Ján] Čarnogurský helps clear up Roma ghetto' and I was really surprised. Firstly that Mr. Čarnogurský, our Justice Minister, wore an orange overall, took a spade and cleaned up all Saturday in Lunik IX [a predominantly Romany slum] in Košice. His step was admirable.
But then I was shocked when I read that 3,000 people live there, but only 500 of them helped. Where were the other 2,500 people? He said his mission was to motivate Roma to solve their problems themselves. My opinion is that they do not want to solve problems, because if they did, they all would have helped.
