Following heavy rains over the weekend and snow that has begun to melt, two villages in Slovakia have been deluged, the TASR newswire learned on Monday, February 25. The authorities have issued flood alerts in the regions of Bratislava, Nitra, Trnava and Banská Bystrica, said Miriam Žiaková from the Fire and Rescue Corps.
"An emergency flood situation was declared in the villages of Plášťovce (Nitra region) and Veľký Biel (Bratislava region). A second-degree alert was in force in three villages in Banská Bystrica region," said Žiaková for the TASR newswire, adding that the third-degree alert was declared in the village of Jablonica (Trnava region). Firefighters in the morning were draining water from the basements of houses in several villages affected by the increased levels of rivers. Žiaková said that firefighters are ready to intervene where necessary.
The SITA newswire wrote on Monday evening that in Jablonica, the third-degree alert was announced, as water flooded local cellars, yards, public spaces and roads. Mayor Alena Hazuchová told SITA that in spite of fire-fighters, and municipal-office’s employees’ engagement, the situation did not improve substantially in the evening, as the water level declined only very slowly. No injuries have been reported in connection with the floods so far.
