A new amendment that will require regulated companies, mobile operators and railway transporters to pay special levies as of September will also pertain to companies that operate in Slovakia, but reside in other countries and are regulated there.
The Sme daily wrote in its Tuesday August 7 issue that the ruling Smer party created the amendment in order to raise €200 million over the next 16 months. Thus, the Irish Ryanair low-cost airliner could pay €24.7 million in one year to Slovak state coffers. Parliament has already passed the amendment.
When asked by Sme, the Finance Ministry did not negate that foreign companies would have to pay the levy. The change was initiated by the parliamentary finance committee which argued that all companies operating in Slovakia in regulated sectors should pay this special levy, regardless of their country of origin.
