Life expectancy low in poor areas

PEOPLE in poor and less developed areas of Slovakia have a lower life expectancy than people in developed and wealthier regions, a study by the Demographic Research Centre (VDC) shows.

According to the daily SME, the recent study shows that men and women in southern and south-eastern Slovakia have a shorter lifespan than people in developed areas such as Bratislava, Piešťany and Prievidza.

According to demographer Danuša Jurčová, unemployment is a contributing factor, causing stress that has a negative impact on physical and mental health.

In 2003 the overall average life expectancy for women was 77.6, and 69.8 for men.
