INTERIOR Minister Daniel Lipšic has said he considers the achievements of the Slovak Police Corps in 2011 to have been “a groundbreaking success”, the TASR newswire reported.
“In 2011 the Police Corps met their goals and objectives,” Lipšic said, as quoted by TASR. “We registered the fewest [number of] fatal accidents in our history, the lowest number of injuries, and police officers collected €10 million less in fines [than in 2010].”
The number of violent offences resulting in apprehensions dropped by one third compared to 2010, as the police concentrated more on precautionary measures than on consequent punishment. Robberies were down by 20 percent year-on-year and violent crimes decreased by 8.5 percent. Statistics on car thefts and burglaries saw similar downward movements.
Police President Jaroslav Spišiak also lauded the new evaluation process applied to police officers, saying they “met their aims 106 percent”, TASR wrote.
