Slovakia won't support the concept of shared accountability for a potential influx of refugees from North Africa, Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)) said after a meeting of EU justice and interior ministers held in Brussels on Thursday, February 24.
Lipšic was speaking in reaction to growing concerns, particularly from Italy, that an exodus of hundreds of thousands of refugees from Libya could take place if the domestic situation in that country gets worse. "We oppose any concept of redistribution on principle. The rules on which the EU asylum law hinges should stay unchanged. Yes, solidarity means helping those who find themselves in a critical situation through no fault of their own, but no such relocation will take place," said Lipšic, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
"The situation could change any day. If these changes, indeed, take place, the EU needs to be flexible. However, we, as ministers, conceded that likening the situation to a biblical exodus is really blowing it out of proportion," added Lipšic.
