A wooden statue depicting St Joseph, the Archangel Michael and Jesus was recently consecrated at the front of the door to the Dom Nádeje (House of Hope) at a cemetery in Kapušany, near Prešov. It was carved by artist Ján Križovenský in his workshop in Kapušany from the trunk of a linden tree that had stood in the cemetery for many years.
Jozef Pribula, the mayor of Kapušany, told the TASR newswire that the linden was about 150 years old and several major branches had already become brittle and there was a risk that they would break and injure a cemetery visitor so the town’s construction committee decided to remove the tree.
“The linden tree stood here for many decades and we didn’t want it to disappear from the public conscience. So we decided that it should stay in the cemetery, albeit in a different form,” Pribula stated. Križovenský carved the figures into the tree’s trunk, four metres high and more than a metre across, for almost 10 months.
The figure of St Joseph is on the right side, the Archangel Michael is on the left and a young Jesus is situated in front. The sculptor said he wanted to present figures in a slightly more modern way, including some stylised elements.
