The higher military court in Trenčín has confirmed a lower court ruling sentencing former communist secret service director Alojz Lorencz to 15 months in jail suspended for abuse of power as a public official. Lorencz is the first high former communist official to be convicted in Slovakia. His crimes included the illegal “preventive jailing” of people suspected of preparing to attend anti-communist meetings in the late 1980s.
