There is only one country in the European Union where drivers are allowed to drive 60 kilometres per hour in towns and villages: Slovakia, the Pravda daily wrote on August 30. The speed limit in other countries is only 50 kilometres per hour. Slovakia will join these countries next year.
According to an analysis on the impact of this measure, elaborated by the Research Institute of Transport in Žilina, the number of fatal accidents and injuries should drop significantly, as around 72 percent of all traffic accidents happen in towns and villages. After the speed limit was decreased in the Czech Republic, the accident rate decreased by as much as 26 percent. - SITA
