Ľudovít Kaník was elected chairman of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union’s (SDKÚ) 11-member parliamentary caucus by fellow MPs of his party on Tuesday, March 27. Kaník, the sole candidate for the post, replaces MP Jozef Mikuš.
"We need our caucus to grow closer together with the party and its other branches and regions, so that our members will feel us not only through the TV screen but also in individual regions. We need to try to be dynamic and visible to the public, even emphatic and aggressive if need be," Kaník said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
When asked if there was anything he would like to do differently compared to his predecessor Mikuš, Kaník replied that it was not about competition. "We will surely attempt to be open to the media and present our plans in the most intensive way possible." Caucus chairmen represent their parties in sessions related to parliamentary business and co-ordinate the work of party legislators.
