CULTURE Minister Marek Maďarič will give up his post as the ruling Smer party’s deputy chair as a reflection of the failure of the party’s official presidential candidate, Prime Minister Robert Fico, to become elected as the country’s president.
“I can only tell you for myself that yesterday I announced to my colleagues at the board of the party that I would give up the deputy chair post at the next board session,” Maďarič told journalists on April 9, as quoted by the SITA newswire, adding that this decision is in line “with my idea of political culture”.
The party board met on April 8 for the first time after the presidential election. The session lasted five hours.
Maďarič, who headed Fico’s presidential campaign, will remain at the helm of the culture department, SITA reported.
The Smer party is reportedly planning an extraordinary convention for early May to assess the presidential election and set priorities for the second half of this election term. Several party members confirmed this information for SITA.
