Many of the protesting hospital doctors throughout Slovakia who have not withdrawn resignations that are due to become effective tomorrow (Thursday, December 1) failed to report for work today. The TASR newswire wrote that they acted in a coordinated way, as part of the protest organised by the Association of Medical Unions (LOZ).
As of noon Wednesday, a shortage of doctors had been confirmed in Bratislava hospitals in Kramáre, Antolská Street, and at the city’s Children’s Teaching Hospital; the Health Ministry also reported that doctors had failed to turn up at Liptovský Mikuláš hospital. One doctor who did not wish to be named told TASR that doctors who did not come to work had justified their absence by saying they were sick. LOZ called on the protesting doctors who failed to appear at their workplaces to immediately contact coordinators and issued instructions on how to behave ordered to work as a result of a state of emergency.
Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik instructed hospital managers how to treat doctors who did not come to work at hospitals on Wednesday. He announced that all doctors had been informed through the media that a state of emergency was being announced across Slovakia.
