Independent MP Igor Matovič is likely to start collecting the required 10,000 signatures to form a new political party this summer, he told a press conference on Thursday, February 17. He explained the delay by saying that he does not feel like walking the streets in winter.
"You get frozen hands and it's much more difficult to write. I dream about collecting these signatures in the streets in person, so they would be well-deserved," Matovič said. He also wants to persuade political parties to change the election laws so as to allow independent candidates to run for parliament, as they can for municipal councils. "However, they won't consent to this one, as such a thing would threaten the influence of political parties," he predicted.
Matovič said he would insist on publication of a list of political nominees to state companies. "No matter how unpleasant this issue is for the coalition, I will open it up for discussion. Simply put, this is one of the key reasons why we've gone into politics, to force politicians to draw a line between posts which will be up for grabs for politicians and which ones for experts," Matovič said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. He said he did not think, however, that the system of political nominations should be abandoned entirely, only that the number of nominations should be reduced.
