THE OTHER Slovak candidate for the judge of the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) is current advisor of President Andrej Kiska, Ján Mazák.
Slovakia has to file a proposal with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe by January 5; but the Slovak Judicial Council failed in early December to select sufficient number of Slovak candidates for the post. Thus Mazák will be added in an additional vote, the Sme daily wrote in its December 30 issue.
Mazák’s candidacy was filed by the chairperson of the Slovak Judicial Council Jana Bajánková, vice-chair of the council Ján Vanko and council’s member Milan Ďurica, according to the SITA newswire. He will be the third Slovak candidate for the ECHR, alongside Košice regional judge Ladislav Duditš and Zuzana Dlugošová, who workded at ECHR as lawyer between 2009 and 2013. The election to pick the third candidate will take place on January 26, deadline for filing candidates is January 2.
Last November, Mazák unsuccessfully ran to be a judge for the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
