Vladimír Mečiar, head of the opposition HZDS party, convinced a regional party branch in Košice not to support an extraordinary party congress to decide Mečiar’s future as leader following the HZDS’ worst-ever election result in September.

However, with Bratislava and Trnava region HZDS branches in favour of the congress and Trenčín, Nitra and Košice against, Mečiar will still have to sway Prešov, Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions if he hopes to avoid the congress.

According to party statutes, a minimum of three regional branches must support the calling of an extraordinary meeting.
