Vladimír Mečiar, three-time former PM and leader of the opposition HZDS party, yesterday again refused to appear before the anti-fraud police for questioning about the financing of his luxury villa. When approached by two fraud squad officers with a summons in the northern Slovak town of Spišská Sobota, Mečiar reportedly said “leave me alone” and departed for a press conference.

On their tenth attempt, police last week managed to deliver a summons to Mečiar in Košice, requiring him to appear for questioning the next day in Trnava. The former Slovak leader, however, failed to appear, calling the summons “not serious” as it left him only 21 hours to comply.
