Mečiar: Hrušovský should resign

VLADIMÍR Mečiar, the leader of the opposition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) called on Pavol Hrušovský to resign as speaker of parliament, the daily SME reported. Hrušovský is also the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (KDH).

The leaders of the HZDS and the KDH met on September 16. Hrušovský wanted to gauge HZDS opinion on early elections. Mečiar was interested to learn if the KDH would cooperate if the HZDS entered the government and European party structures. Hrušovský answered "no" and the meeting was over.

Other opposition parties are not considering calling on Hrušovský to resign. Smer party MP Miroslav Číž said the KDH call was a result of the "situation" and the current state of relations between the KDH and the HZDS.

Communist Party (KSS) Chairman Vladimír Ďaďo said that it was Mečiar's personal matter.
