THE HEALTH of Vladimír Mečiar, chairman of the governing coalition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), was stable after his heart surgery on January 21.
His recovery is proceeding according to plan, said the head of the Central Slovakia Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Peter Mečiar.
If no complications arise, Mečiar was expected to be released from hospital by January 26. Doctors say he might be able to return to work in two to three weeks.
Mečiar underwent a quadruple bypass on January 22. A team of specialists from Banská Bystrica and Košice carried out the operation, which took three hours and fifteen minutes. The patient was connected to a heart-lung machine, and his heart was stopped for 41 minutes.
