THE SLOVAK Labour Office and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have a difference of opinion when it comes to national unemployment rates, the daily SME wrote.
According to the OECD, the unemployment rate in Slovakia has increased since last year to reach a level of 18 percent. The Slovak Labour Office’s official statement is that the Slovak unemployment rate is at 14 percent.
The reason for the discrepancy is that the Slovak Labour Office and the OECD use different methodologies to arrive at unemployment figures. The Slovak Labour Office excludes those who are not actively seeking jobs, while the OECD counts all of those who are registered as unemployed, whether they want jobs or not.
Poland is the only country with a higher rate of unemployment than Slovakia among OECD countries. After Slovakia, Spain has the highest rate of unemployment.
