THE FOREIGN Affairs Ministry has warned Slovaks against critical situation in Libya and recommended them either to leave the country immediately, or not to travel there at all.
“The government does not control the security situation and there is an armed conflict between the belligerent militias,” the ministry press release reads, as quoted by the SITA newswire. “The stay of foreigners in the country is therefore connected with high risk to life.”
The ministry also informed that Slovak citizens can use limited consular assistance of the Slovak Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. In the emergency, they can also ask for help at any embassy or general consulate of a European Union member state in Libya.
In the ongoing conflict, the Libyan government tries to take control over armed militants who helped to overthrow former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, and now refuse to disarm. So far, at least 79 people died and more than 400 were injured in the fights that started in mid-July. Because of the worsened security situation, the UN and Red Cross have withdrawn workers from Libya and on July 26 US diplomats left the country, as reported by SITA.
