FINANCE Minister Ivan Mikloš, the deputy chairman of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), has warned of the danger that a coalition unacceptable to the international community might be formed after elections.
Miloš said that a government between the populist social-democratic Smer, the far-right Slovak National Party (SNS), and the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) could be formed after parliamentary elections on June 17, givenm their current standings in pre-election polls.
According to Mikloš, such a coalition would be very similar to the one that ruled in Slovakia between 1994 and 1998, comprising the HZDS, the SNS and the Association of Slovak Workers (ZRS), and could again lead Slovakia into international isolation.
Mikloš said that such government would endanger Slovakia's entry to the eurozone, planned for 2009, and would increase ethnic tensions in the country.
As an alternative to such a government, Mikloš proposed a government dominated by a center-right bloc featuring the SDKÚ, the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) and the Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH).
