EDUCATION Minister Ján Mikolaj wants to make modern European institutions of Slovak elementary and high schools. He plans to spend almost Sk11 billion (Ř333 million) on computers, broadband internet access and a Data Centre school database by 2011, of which Sk7 billion should be covered from EU funds. The minister unveiled the four-year modernisation plan on February 19, the SITA newswire wrote.
Under the modernisation plan, elementary schools should have one computer for every ten pupils, while in high schools five students will share one computer. This plan anticipates a total of 63,000 computers for high schools and 51,000 computers for elementary schools. About 28,500 computers are to be bought annually.
The modernisation project of schools should also bring about change to the conservative education system. Mikolaj plans to completely change the curriculum.
