The most beautiful dog at the weekend's two-day international Duo Danube dog show at Bratislava's Incheba exhibition centre was a miniature long-haired dachshund.

The dog won the title on Sunday, Slovak Cynology Association president Štefan Štefík told the TASR newswire.

With 5,803 dogs, the seventh year of this exhibition had a record-breaking number of competitors. There were 200 breeds on show, with the Rhodesian Ridgeback having the greatest number of entrants.

Also presented at the show were four original, internationally-recognised Slovak national breeds, including the Československý Vlčiak (Czechoslovak Wolf-dog), which is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its recognition as a breed.

In 37 competitions, dogs were judged by representatives from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and countries as far away as Portugal and Costa Rica. For the first time, the winners of breed categories had a chance to enter their dog in the highly prestigious Cruft dog show in Birmingham, England.

The event also featured other competitions, such as handling of young dogs and an agility competition.

Štefík said Duo Danube was a preparation for the World Dog Exhibition, which Slovakia will host for the first time in 2009.
