Education Minister Eugen Jurzyca is proposing that university students should in future only need to defend their thesis in order to graduate. This could mean that university students do not have to study for weeks for their final state exams, unless individual school rectors decide otherwise.
"A school will be able to decide whether they will require additional exams, too, but in line with the law it would not have to," the minister said, as quoted by the SITA newswire. Jurzyca plans to incorporate the change in a draft revision to the University Act. He explained that the move reflects trends in the most successful countries. The ministry said it considers thesis defence to be sufficient proof of whether a student has studied honestly.
