EDUCATION Minister Martin Fronc has written a letter to students explaining why re-sitting the school leaving examination in Maths is good for them. The letter follows a nationwide protest against the re-sit, the Hospodárske noviny business daily reported.
A total of 2,714 students will have to re-sit their Maths tests on April 26 because earlier this month they received test forms with the correct answers indicated.
Having noticed the problem, however, not all schools distributed the faulty tests. Fronc says that if he succumbed to students' pressure and only had those who received the faulty forms re-sit the test, it would be a breach the equality of opportunities principle.
"Immediately after April 26, they would most likely start comparing whether the tests were equally difficult," Fronc wrote in the letter.
However, some students are threatening to boycott the re-sit.
A parents’ association, the VVSRRZ, has appealed to the students to re-sit the exam "so that no-one can ever doubt your school leaving certificates".
