IN AN effort to cut down the number of illegally held firearms and to identify weapons that may have been used in criminal activities, cabinet ministers yesterday approved an amendment to the Gun Control Act regulating firearms and ammunition.
The amendment, proposed by opposition Smer party MP Robert Kaliňák, stipulates that people who own firearms without a proper licence, will be able to hand them into the police without fear of punishment.
According to Interior Minister Vladimír Palko, the arms will be inspected by weapons experts to determine if they have been used in criminal acts, the SITA news agency reported.
Kaliňák also proposes to allow those who return illegally held guns to apply for a firearms’ licence within two months of handing in an illegal firearm, provided that the surrendered weapon has not be used in a criminal offence.
