SLOVAKIA’S Foreign Affairs Ministry has recommended all Slovaks who currently are in Iraq to leave the country immediately.
“The security situation in most of Iraq is critical, without the prospect of stabilisation soon,” the ministry statement reads, as quoted by the SITA newswire. “Travelling in the country is linked with a threat to life.”
The Foreign Ministry currently does not register in its system any Slovak wanting to travel to Iraq, said Peter Susko from ministry’s press department.
“We however warn that it is only informative data since not every tourist registers before the journey, though we have been repeatedly recommending the registration also via media,” Susko said, as quoted by SITA.
Slovakia has an embassy in Iraq that is led by Miroslav Naď. It is currently not in danger and Slovakia does not plan to close it, Susko said.
“We closely monitor the situation in the whole country and if it proves necessary, we will adopt needed measures in time,” Susko added, as quoted by SITA.
Back in June, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant took control over big part of north-western Iraq, including the second biggest city in the country, Mosul, which it included into a so-called “caliphate”, together with nearly territories of Syria. According to the UN, more than one million people have left their homes to escape the fundamentalists, SITA reported.
