Money from Russian debt to upgrade Slovak MiG-29s

Finances slated from the settlement of Russia's soviet-era debt to Slovakia will be spent on upgrading the Slovak Armed Forces’ MiG-29 jet fighters, Slovak Defence Minister Juraj Liška told President Rudolf Schuster, the TASR news wire wrote.

But based on an exception issued by the government, part of the allocated money can also be used to modernise Slovakia's helicopter fleet, presidential spokesman Ján Füle told journalists.

The helicopters might then be used to protect the border between Slovakia and Ukraine after Slovakia joins the European Union in May, he added.
