The 1,800 participants in the poll, entitled "The Way We Are", placed 'human society' as the third most important influence (15%), followed by 'laws of nature' (13.4%), 'strong personalities' (3.6%), 'human aggression' (3.5%), 'major nations' (2.7%), 'spiritual forces' (2.1%) and 'cosmic forces' (1.1%).

The poll was conducted as part of the groundwork for a project called "Slovak Consumers on the Threshold of the Third Millennium". Organised by the advertising agency Publicis Knut (PK), the project aims at exploring the lifestyles and personal values of Slovak citizens. Pavol Minarek, PK's head strategic planner, said that people have become more "materialistically-oriented" in recent years, leading more consumers to make purchasing decisions based on brand-name, instead of price.
