Funds poured into the Ice Hockey World Championship due to take place in Bratislava and Košice in a month ought to return in the shape of new investments, representatives of the two cities concurred at an HN Club discussion forum in Bratislava on Wednesday, March 30.
"Leaving aside income from accommodation taxes, the City of Bratislava doesn't expect any other income from the championship. This is in spite of the fact that it will have spent €56 million on reconstructing the stadium and other funds on the advertising campaign," said Bratislava’s mayor, Milan Ftáčnik, as quoted by the TASR newswire. "We're hopeful, though, that everything will come back in the long term and that the championship will be of help to us," he added.
Kosice deputy mayor Ladislav Lazár largely echoed Ftáčnik's view. "We're striving to make 'business' visitors remember the emotions they'll experience. We want them to have fond memories that could translate into secondary benefits, be they investments or something else," he said.
