Penetration of mobile telephony services in Slovakia reached ‘101.03 percent’ as of late September 2009, a rise of 2.36 percentage points from the same time last year. The three mobile operators in Slovakia, Orange Slovensko, T-Mobile Slovensko and Telefonica O2 Slovakia, registered 5.47 million active SIM cards as of September 2007, a net increase of 127,000 year-on-year. The operators reported an increase in the number of active clients by 17,000 in Q3 alone, the SITA newswire wrote.
As of September 30, 2009, Orange registered 2.869 million active SIM cards, compared with 2.138 million for T-Mobile and 463,000 for Telefonica O2 Slovakia. Telefonica O2 posted year-on-year growth in active clients of 186,000. The number of T-Mobile’s active SIM cards dropped by 37,000 and Orange’s by 22,000 from the same period a year ago.
In the July-September period, only Telefonica O2 Slovakia reported an increase in the number of clients, by 46,000. In Q3, T-mobile reported a decrease of 22,000 active SIM cards and Orange a decrease of 7,000.
The ‘101.03 percent’ figure related to the penetration of mobile services is calculated on the basis of comparative methodology, classifying customers of prepaid services who have conducted at least one active transaction on their SIM cards in the past three months, together with clients using postpaid services as active clients. The population of Slovakia, 5.4 million, serves as the basis for the calculations.
