More Roma come home

A group of 37 Roma returned to Slovakia from Finland, where they had sought asylum after Finland dropped a visa requirement. Tougher asylum laws and smaller daily allowances have reduced asylum claims in Finland, however, and more Roma are expected to leave the country in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Great Britain announced it will in future regard applications for asylum from citizens of EU candidate countries as groundless. The UK has been a major target of Slovak Roma seeking ‘economic’ asylum in Europe since 1997.
