Most-Híd has joined the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest pan-European political organisation, November 13. The party, which focuses on strong relations with Slovakia’s Hungarian-minority party, is the EPP’s 74th member.
The decision was passed despite the opposition from Hungarian Fidesz and its allies. Among Slovak members, it was the Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH) and Slovak Christian and Democratic Union (SDKÚ) that voted in favour of Most-Híd, whereas ethnic-Hungarian Party of Hungarian Community (SMK) chose to embrace the stance of Fidesz.
At its session on November 13, the EPP elected Executive Chairman Joseph Daul and held a vote on the induction of its newest member. Fidesz promoted a proposal to postpone the vote on Most-Híd’s membership until after the European Parliament election, set for May 2014. Such a move was supported by Fidesz’s sister party KDNP of Hungary, Democratic Association of Hungarians in Romania and SMK.
