“The Slovak Judges’ Association, according to our information, directly proposed Štefan Harabin for this post,” ZOJ president Katarína Javorčíková wrote, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that the association simply announced its support for Harabin’s candidacy without the approval of its members. The letter was addressed to Slovak Judges’ Association president Dana Bystrianska.

“The public does not differentiate between the proposal or the support of a specific candidate and perceives your statements as a sign of the will of judges associated in the ZSS to re-elect Štefan Harabin,” Javorčíková added, as quoted by TASR.

The open letter came in response to earlier statements by Bystrianska, who said that Harabin has the “support of the majority of judges”, which the ZOJ considers to be misleading.

The ZSS confirmed Harabin as their candidate in a vote on April 28.

“Judges in general believe that he is an individual who has demonstrated certain resolute stances,” Bystrianska said, as quoted by TASR, adding that no other candidate was proposed.
