NEARLY three in five Slovaks are convinced that the country’s NATO membership guarantees security for the country.
A recent survey by the Focus polling agency conducted for the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) showed that 58 percent of the respondents see NATO as a guarantee of security, the TASR newswire reported.
The poll gathered views from a sample of 1,000 Slovaks between April and June.
As many as 59 percent of Slovaks think that if Russia attacked any NATO country, Slovakia and fellow NATO-member states would be required to come to that country’s defence.
“One quarter of people don’t see any guarantee of security in our NATO membership and are against the commitment to become involved in defending a fellow NATO-member country were it to be attacked,” TASR reported, quoting the survey results.
Some 17 percent of the respondents were unable to take a stand on the issue.
Forty-six percent of those asked agreed that in light of the crisis involving Russia and Ukraine there is a need to bolster NATO’s military presence in central and eastern European countries.
