MPs on holiday: no work, great pay

DURING the summer parliamentary recess, MPs cost taxpayers Sk37 million (€955,500) while doing no work at all.

This summer MPs will have 33 days off, but earn the same amount as when parliament is in session, the Pravda daily reported.

An MP's basic salary is Sk47,500 (€1,224) per month, plus a fixed-sum bonus of well over Sk30,000 (€770). The average salary in Slovakia is around Sk16,000 (€412)per month. Since the last summer recess, MPs have worked less than 100 days in sessions or on committees, compared to over 200 days worked by the rest of the country.
